Benefits of Massage

The Benefits of Massage
More people than ever before are adding massage therapy as a routine part of their lifestyle, using it to:

  • help relieve stress
  • help reduce pain (including low back pain)
  • lower blood pressure
  • increase circulation and flexibility
  • boost the immune system.
  • reduce pain following surgery

Although massage is growing in popularity, it is hardly a new phenomenon. Many ancient civilisations embraced massage as a form of medical care including Egyptian, Indian, Chinese, Greek and Roman cultures.

There are over 200 massage techniques out there, and the type that's right for you depends on your reason for obtaining one.

  • Popular types of massage include:
  • Swedish Massage - for relaxation, increasing circulation and energizing you.
  • Deep Tissue Massage - for repairing muscle damage from injuries, releasing toxins stored in the body and breaking patterns of muscle tension in the body.
  • Sports Massage – for preventing athletic injury, relieving swelling, fatigue and muscle tension, increasing flexibility and enhancing athletic performance.
  • Shiatsu – used for pain relief, relaxation and to heal illness.
  • Thai Massage - used for relaxation, to stimulate internal organs, reduce tension and balance the body's energy system.

At Phoenix Health & Fitness we use a type of massage called Neuro-Muscular Therapy (or NMT) to eliminate pain and educate the patient on ways to prevent recurrence of the injury.

NMT is a kind of deep tissue massage that focuses on releasing:
• Tender points (a point that hurts to the touch and causes some degree of pain in that area of the body)
• Trigger points (may not always be painful to the touch but causes a degree of pain to be felt
in another area of the body).

These develop in muscles as a result of training, trauma/injury, stress and poor posture.

Using specific massage techniques combined with movement, stretching and strengthening, NMT helps to

  1. Eliminate muscle spasm
  2. Improve posture
  3. Restore flexibility
  4. Restore proper biomechanics
  5. Increase muscle strength
  6. Increase muscular endurance
  7. Enhances the function of joints, muscles and biomechanics (movement).

It is effective in treating numerous conditions including low back, neck pain, shoulder pain, hip and knee problems, Temporo-Mandibular Joint (jaw) disorders, headaches and scoliosis.
